5 highlights from India's 43-run win over Sri Lanka in first T20I

Missed SKY's first game as India's full-time T20I captain? Worry not, we have got you covered

Jaiswal, Gill go crazy in powerplay

Yashasvi Jaiswal (21-ball 40) and Shubman Gill (16-ball 34) got India off to a fiery start, putting up 74 runs by the end of six overs, the second-highest powerplay score against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

The two also hit 14 boundaries in the powerplay, the joint second-most for India in this phase in T20Is.

No captaincy fuss for SKY

In his first game as India’s full-time captain, Suryakumar Yadav scored 58 off 26 deliveries, including eight fours and two maximums.

SKY now has four fifties in eight innings as India’s T20I captain, the joint second-most in the first 10 matches as skipper in T20Is.

Pathirana keeps India below 220

India were 146/2 at the end of 12 overs and looked set to get 220-230. However, that’s when Matheesha Pathirana (4/40) dismissed SKY, Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag and Rishabh Pant to give SL some control in the last few overs.

Pant, in particular, struggled to get going. The wicketkeeper-batter was on 20 off 20 at one stage but managed to find a few boundaries at the end to finish on 49 off 33.

Nissanka and Co. give SL a perfect start

Chasing a target of 214, Pathum Nissanka (48-ball 79), Kusal Mendis (27-ball 45) and Kusal Perera (14-ball 20) gave Sri Lanka a solid start.

Nissanka and Mendis first added 84 runs in 8.4 overs before Perera and Nissanka put on 56 runs for the second wicket. Nissanka, who registered his highest T20I score, got out on the first delivery of the 15th over and his dismissal sealed the game in India’s favour.

India wrap up the game in a convincing manner

The hosts were 140/2 in 14.1 overs when Nissanka perished, but India then took control of the game and knocked Sri Lanka out of the contest.

It was Axar who dismissed Nissanka and Perera in the same over before Riyan Parag knocked over Kamindu Mendis. Parag ended up taking the last two wickets as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 170, losing the game by 43 runs.

Sri Lanka lost nine wickets in the space of 30 runs.
