Zimbabwe appoint Justin Sammons as new head coach

Sammons replaces Dave Houghton, who took Zimbabwe to greater heights during his tenure as a coach

On Wednesday (June 19), Zimbabwe Cricket announced, following a meeting, that Justin Sammons will take over as the new head coach. Sammons will take over the reign from Dave Houghton after the latter resigned in the aftermath of the team's failure to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024.ย

"We are delighted to confirm Justin as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men's National Team," said ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani.ย

"He brings a wealth of coaching experience and a reputation of identifying, nurturing and developing some of the best young talent in South Africa. His hard-working and passionate approach as well as sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward,โ€ Mukuhlani added.ย

Sammons was part of South Africaโ€™s high-performance programme setup and was also the Proteas batting coach from 2021 to 2023. Former Zimbabwe cricketer Dion Ebrahim, who has some experience at the BlackCaps, will also join the backroom staff as the assistant coach.ย

"It is an absolute privilege to be appointed as the Zimbabwe Senior Men's National Team Head Coach. I look forward to the road ahead and I am excited to start working with this talented group of players,โ€ Sammons said.ย

Elton Chigumbura, a notable name in Zimbabwe cricket, will take over as the head coach of the U-19 side. Meanwhile, Paul Adams will assume the role of a bowling coach. Rangarirai Norbert Manyande will be both the assistant coach and the batting coach.
