Former Indian pacer, Zaheer Khan could be in line to become Indian Premier League (IPL) side Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) next mentor. As per Cricbuzz' reports, If the negotiations come to fruition, he will be working closely with LSG’s head coach Justin Langer and the support staff that currently includes Adam Voges, Lance Klusener and Jonty Rhodes in the upcoming season.
LSG haven’t had a mentor since Gautam Gambhir joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for IPL 2024. Gambhir mentored KKR to the title and was picked up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as the Indian team’s head coach, replacing Rahul Dravid. Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel, part of LSG's support staff also joined Gambhir as India's bowling coach.
As a result, two vacancies were created in the LSG backroom staff. Zaheer would be filling in for both Gambhir and Morkel, working as the mentor and also helping out the bowlers. The left-arm pacer is among India’s greatest seamers with over 600 wickets in 309 international matches, including 92 Tests.
The Mumbaikar also featured in 100 IPL games, playing for the Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi franchises. Post his retirement from all forms of the game in 2017, Zaheeer has been a part of Mumbai Indians’ back room staff for a number of seasons.
There are talks of another prominent figure joining the LSG setup but the details are yet to be disclosed.
