'Will be happy if he can win us IPL' - Ponting after breaking the bank for Shreyas Iyer

Iyer had started his IPL captaincy stint under Ponting at the Delhi Capitals in 2018 and took them to the final of the 2020 season.

Ricky Ponting, the newly appointed head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Punjab Kings (PBKS), said that he wants Shreyas Iyer, their biggest buy in the IPL Mega auction 2025 to win them the IPL 2025 trophy, like how he did for his previous franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

“I haven’t spoken to him (Shreyas Iyer about captaincy) yet, I tried to call him before the auction but he didn’t pick up,” Ponting laughed at the end of the first two marquee sets bids were completed on Day 1 of the mega auction on November 24 (Sunday).

“He’s been a successful captain in IPL before, I worked with him 3-4 years in Delhi and he was the championship winner last season,” added the former Delhi Capitals coach.

Punjab paid Iyer a whopping INR 26.75 Cr, making him the highest paid IPL player. However, the record lasted only two bids before Rishabh Pant overtook him at INR 27 Cr. Pant was bought by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

“I’m delighted to work with him again, if he can do that for us in the IPL I’ll be pretty happy,” hoped the 49-year-old, under whom Iyer was first made the captain of in IPL.
