West Indies' Amir Jangoo becomes first-ever player to achieve rare ODI feat

Jangoo smashed an unbeaten ton, becoming the first-ever player to smash a hundred on ODI debut batting at No.5 and below

27-year-old Amir Jangoo made his ODI debut for West Indies in the third ODI against Bangladesh in Basseterre on December 12 (Thursday), and the left-hander scripted history in his maiden appearance.

Jangoo smashed an unbeaten ton, becoming the first-ever player to smash a hundred on ODI debut batting at No.5 and below. The 27-year-old walked in at No.6 and hammered the hosts home, helping them chase 322 with over four overs to spare.

Highest scores on ODI debut (No.5 or lower)

104* - Amir Jangoo (WI) vs BAN in 2024

99* - Swapnil Patil (UAE) vs SCO in 2014

92 - Towhid Hridoy (BAN) vs IRE in 2023

89 - Sam Hain (ENG) vs IRE in 2023

Jangoo also became just the second West Indian batter ever to score a ton on ODI debut. The last person to achieve that feat was Desmond Haynes, back in 1978.

Overall, Jangoo is the 18th batter to score a ton on ODI debut. The last person to achieve the feat was Scotland’s Michael English, who smashed 107 against Namibia in Dundee in July this year.

Jangoo, who represents Trinidad & Tobago, has been in outrageous form in List A cricket of late. Across his last six List A innings, the left-hander has amassed 490 runs at an average of 163.33 and strike rate of 97.6.
