It was a nervy win for the Barbados Royals Women against Guyana Amazon Warriors Women in the opening match of the Women's Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2024 in Tarouba, Trinidad. Chasing a modest target of 119, Hayley Matthews stepped up to the plate, remaining unbeaten on 61 off 58 deliveries, as her side scrapped home with one wicket and one ball to spare.
South Africa pacer Shabnim Ismail tried her best to tilt the match in her side's favour with figures of 4/16, but in the end, Guyana fell 10-15 runs short. Stafanie Taylor top-scored for Guyana with 38, with no other batter even scoring 20, largely thanks to pacer Aaliyah Alleyne, who kept the opposition in check, finishing with 3/21.
The Amazon Warriors will look to put this loss behind them and get off the mark when they take on Trinbago Knight Riders Women next on August 23 (Friday) in Tarouba. The Royals, on the other hand, are in action later today (August 22), and they, too, face TKR at the same venue.
