Vastrakar overtakes Goswami to become India's highest wicket-taking pacer in WT20Is

Pooja Vastrakar dismissed Rabeya Khan as her 57th wicket in T20Is, which took her ahead of the pace bowling legend

India’s ace allrounder Pooja Vastrakar is having a stellar year with the ball in T20I cricket. While she picked 20 wickets in just 14 innings in 2024 in the shortest format of the game, she also climbed the wicket-taking charts for Indian pacers briskly.

Renuka Singh had already done the damage for Bangladesh in the first semifinal of the Women’s Asia Cup in Dambulla by picking up three wickets for just 10 runs in her four overs and derailing the innings early.

Vastrakar didn’t have to work hard to get her 57th T20I wicket and get to the top of the wicket-taking charts for Indian pacers in the shortest format.

She bowled a short delivery in the 11th over to Rabeya, who is known more for her leg-spin than her batting. How she played that ball made it clear that she hasn’t faced genuine short and fast bowling for quite some time. The ball came into her body, and she miscued the attempted pull. Shafali Verma ran ahead from mid-on and took a fine catch.

With that wicket, Vastrakar left behind the pace bowling legend Jhulan Goswami, who had 56 wickets in T20Is for India in 67 innings. Renuka is third on that list with 50 T20I wickets.

Bangladesh could only score 80/8 in the semifinal, as the Indian bowlers didn’t allow the opposition batters to come into the game at any point in time.
