During the first Test against West Indies in Adelaide, Usman Khawaja had to walk off the field concussed after getting hit flush on his chin by a brutal delivery from Shamar Joseph. Later, he was cleared of a concussion and a fractured jaw, for which he went for a scan to check for any structural damage.
Now, he seems to be on course to participate in the second Test against West Indies in Brisbane, given all concussion protocols are completed on Sunday.
"Usman Khawaja continues to progress through protocols following a head impact in the first Test match against the West Indies. He completed normal concussion assessments today," Cricket Australia said in a statement.
"Khawaja will continue to be monitored for any delayed symptoms. He will be reviewed again tomorrow prior to returning to training ahead of the second Test match in Brisbane."
In case Khawaja is deemed unfit to play the Test, Australia will have to find a new partner to team up with Steve Smith, who was promoted up the order after the retirement of David Warner. They are likely to open with Matt Renshaw, who recently was released from the hosts’ Test squad to play the Big Bash League (BBL) qualifiers.
