Usman Khawaja becomes first Australian to hit double century in Sri Lanka

The last Australian to hit double century in Asia was Jason Gillespie, who hit 201* against Bangladesh in 2006

Usman Khawaja hit his maiden Test double century during Day 2 of the first Test of the two-match series against Sri Lanka at Galle on January 30 (Thursday). With this, he also became the first Australian in the history of Test cricket to reach the coveted double ton in Sri Lanka.

However, Khawaja is not the first one to do so in the subcontinent and joined the long list of Aussie stalwarts who previously hit a double century in Asian conditions. The other Australians to score double centuries in the subcontinent are Mark Taylor, Greg Chappell, Dean Jones, Matthew Hayden and Jason Gillespie.

Among them, the last to do so was Gillespie, who scored an unbeaten 201 against Bangladesh in 2006.

At Lunch on Day 2 Khawaja remained unbeaten on 204. He has the opportunity to become only the second Aussie after Mark Taylor to record a triple century in Asia. Taylor had achieved the feat against Pakistan in 1998.

So far in his innings, the 38-year-old has hit 16 fours and a six and has been active enough to play only 299 balls. Thanks to this knock of his, Australia were in quite comfortable position--475/3 at Lunch.
