The United States of America (USA) have scripted history as they have qualified for the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup for the first time, and that too in their first-ever attempt. Their game against Ireland on June 14 in Lauderdale was washed out, and as a result, they have made it to the next round ahead of a seasoned team like Pakistan.
Canada, who are also in Group A, registered a historic win against Ireland, but will not progress any further. Wicketkeeper-batter Shreyas Movva says that USA's progress into the next round will be a motivation for them going forward.
"Those guys were working really hard and I'm happy for them, how they qualified. It's a motivation for us going into the next tournaments that the USA have done it so we can do it in that way we can look at it," Movva said ahead of Canada's game against India in Lauderhill.
Looking back the Canada's journey in the tournament, Movva said, "This World Cup is a very good opportunity for us to perform and to make a name for the country and also for the players.
"It's a good opportunity for Canada and the way we prepared for the tournament, it shows that how we played against the USA and Ireland, right? Ireland, we won the match, USA was a close match, till the 28th over we were in the game.
"So, the preparation was really hard for us and it is showing off the result. But it depends. If we won against the USA, we could have qualified the game for the Super Eights.
Movva believes that there are plenty of positives for Canada with the waythey have been playing for the last year-and-a-half.
"If you look at our last one year or one and half year with coach Pubudu [Pubudu Dassanayake], we have won the tournaments wherever we go like in Dubai we won four out of four ODIs and if you go back you see [against] Bermuda we lost the first game and we came back with five victories to qualify to the World Cup," Movva said.
"So, we know that we had that. It's just that the pressure of knowing that, okay, the Test playing nation is opposite to us, sometimes get to the mind. Otherwise, if you just concentrate on the cricket, I think we'll do better. That's what I feel."
Canada will end their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign as they get ready to take on India in Florida later today (June 15). However, we have already seen two washouts already, and it will not be all that surprising to see another one today.
