United States of America (USA) cricketer Jaskaran Malhotra, who hogged the limelight after hitting six sixes in an over against Gaudi Toka of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2021, announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday (August 8).
The 34-year-old made a sudden announcement through his social media handles. Saying that he enjoyed every bit of his international career with the USA side, having made his debut in 2019 against UAE in Dubai.
“August 8th, 2024, marks the end of an incredible chapter in my cricketing journey. Four [five actually] years ago, I made my international T20 debut for the USA in Dubai, with my dad proudly watching from the stands. Today, I announce my retirement from international cricket,” Jaskaran said in a letter uploaded on his social media.
His innings of unbeaten 173 against PNG in which he hit six sixes is also the highest score by a USA batter in ODI history. No one is even close to that with the second-highest individual score for the USA being 130 by Monank Patel.
At 34, Jaskaran, who could not be part of the Major League Cricket (MLC) this year, did not seem to have any way to get back into the national side. Despite being the seventh-highest run-getter for the team in ODI history, he chose to bid goodbye and concentrate on giving back to the game he loved the most.
“While I’ll continue to play in franchise leagues, my focus now shifts to giving back to the sport. I’m committed to helping young American cricketers achieve their dreams of playing for this great nation,” said the man who represented the USA in 18 ODIs and 17 T20Is.
Jaskaran, who scored a combined total of 612 runs, took 15 catches and inflicted three stumpings across his international career, was born in Chandigarh, India and also plied his trade for Himachal Pradesh in Indian domestic cricket.
