Surrey wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith and Nottinghamshire pacer Dillon Pennington have been named in England's squad for the three-match Test series against the West Indies, starting July 10 at Lord's. Gus Atkinson is the only other member of the squad not to have played Test cricket, while Chris Woakes returns for the first time since July 2023.
Pennington, who joined Nottinghamshire this year from Worcestershire, has been a top performer in the County Championship, having picked up 29 wickets at 23.03 so far. Simth, on the other hand, has played a pivotal role in Surrey remaining top of the Division table, having amassed 507 runs at 76.93 and could make his debut at Lord's. He played a couple of One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for England in September last year against Ireland.
James Anderson will play his 188th and final Test at Lord's, where he will look to add to his 700 scalps in the format. He announced his intentions in May this year.
"The first Test of the summer is always a special moment, but it will be extra poignant with it being Jimmy’s [Anderson] last Test before he retires. He has given everything to the sport since his Test debut in 2003. We all would like to wish him well as he walks out at Lord’s for the last time for England," ECB Managing Director for England Men's Cricket, Rob Key, said
"We are looking forward to getting the season underway against a strong West Indies side in what will be an excellent Test series.”
After the first Test at Lord's, the action will move to Trent Bridge (July 18) and Edgbaston (July 26) for the second and third Test, respectively.
