This might be the last Test summer of Anderson’s career: Reports

While breaking Muralitharan’s record might not be possible, the veteran seamer is just eight wickets behind Shane Warne’s tally of 708 Test scalps

The upcoming cricket summer in England might be the last for James Anderson. The Guardian has reported that England Test coach Brendon McCullum flew from New Zealand to England to tell Anderson in person that the team is looking towards the future.

England’s Test side is focusing on building a side for the next Ashes, which will be played in Australia in 2025-2026, by which time Anderson will be 43. Although, Anderson was in good form during the series against India just a few months ago. He also said then that he has been in his best shape.

However, Anderson acknowledged it on the Tailenders podcast, where he regularly features, that he has to work hard and prove that he is worth a place on the side. After the Indian tour, when McCullum was asked about Anderson’s future, he was cautiously optimistic in his response.

“I don’t know, honestly,” McCullum said. "Who knows where the end line for him is, but for now, just enjoy having Jimmy around and ensure we utilise the experience he’s got. He’s a great resource for the other guys within the unit.”

England’s prospective fast bowling resources include individuals with very little Test experience, like Josh Tongue, Matthew Potts, Bryson Crase, etc., who would need Anderson’s guidance while taking their first steps in Test cricket for England.

The upcoming cricket summer in England will feature six Tests against West Indies and Sri Lanka.
