On October 20 (Sunday), Laura Wolvaardt-led South African side reached their second-ever Women’s T20 World Cup final and, in the process, created quite a unique record. The Proteas women became only the second team to remain unchanged in an entire edition of a T20 World Cup for teams reaching the final.
Back in 2012, England were the first team to reach a final and have an unchanged team throughout the tournament. Barring those two occasions, the other two teams to remain unchanged in an entire edition were India in 2010 and Thailand in 2020.
Prior to this clash, South Africa failed to get over the line in just one game against England in Sharjah. But ever since then, they have been the team to beat, including crushing Australia in the first semi-final.
On the other hand, New Zealand reached the final thanks to a clutch last-over win against West Indies in the second semi-final. Before that, they lost their group-stage clash against Australia in a crushing manner.
Interestingly, neither of the two sides have lifted the trophy in the shortest edition. New Zealand’s only win in T20 World Cups came all the way back in 2000.
