Shubman Gill’s hot and cold run in Test cricket continued as the right-hander, on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, registered his fifth duck in Test cricket.
Gill looked like he had turned a corner in the second half of the England Test series at home earlier in the year, finishing the series with scores of 91, 38, 52* & 110, but started the 2024 home Test season off with an eight-ball duck.
Following the duck, the 25-year-old joined an unwanted list.
The duck at Chepauk was Gill’s third duck of the calendar year. In 2024, Pakistan’s Abdullah Shafique is the only other top-seven batter to score three or more ducks in Tests.
Gill also became just the sixth Indian batter ever to register three or more ducks in a calendar year at home in Test cricket.
As it stands, for India, only Cheteshwar Pujara and Dilip Vengsarkar have scored more ducks in home Tests batting at No.3 than Gill (3).
