When Shafali Verma stepped out to bat against Bangladesh in the fifth T20I of the bilateral series in Sylhet, she became the youngest Indian to play 100 international games for her country.
She achieved this feat at the age of 20 years and 102 days, breaking the record of Sachin Tendulkar, who played his 100th game for India way back in 1994 when he was just 20 years and 329 days old.
This isn’t the first time the Rohtak youngster has broken Tendulkar's record. Earlier in 2019, she broke his record of being the youngest to score an international half-century, which he did at the age of 16 years and 214 days.
Shafali scored her first fifty when she was just 15 years and 285 days old. She blasted off to 73 runs off 49 balls against the West Indies in West Indies in just her fifth T20I. That same year, she became the youngest-ever Indian woman to play a T20I for India.
Just two years after that, in 2021, when she made her Test debut against England in Bristol, she became the youngest, male or female, to play for India in all three formats of cricket.
Shafali also justified the trust shown in her by the BCCI by backing her early selection with performances and also becoming the youngest cricketer to complete 1000 runs in T20Is in 2022. Shortly after that feat, she captained India in their victorious campaign in the inaugural U19 Women’s World Cup in South Africa. That remains the only ICC Trophy won by any Indian women’s side.
Today, in the fifth T20I against Bangladesh, she scored a run-a-ball 14. India have already sealed the five-match T20I series 4-0 going into the last T20I at Sylhet.
