Root surpasses Lara to become seventh-highest run-getter in Test history

Root entered this Test 14 runs behind the West Indian legend

England’s Joe Root continues to climb the run-scoring ladder as the 33-year-old is now the seventh-highest run-getter in Test history after surpassing Brian Lara’s tally of 11,953 runs on the morning of Day 2 of the third Test against West Indies at Edgbaston on July 27 (Saturday).

Root entered this Test 14 runs behind the West Indian legend. He was 2* overnight on Day 1 and then surpassed Lara off the bowling of Jayden Seales in the 14th over of England’s first innings.

However, England’s number four had luck on his side. Off the fourth ball of the 10th over, he was saved by a non-review from West Indies. Seales would have sent Root packing had the visitors reviewed the LBW call that was given, which was not out on-field.

Root, England’s talisman, entered this series as the 10th-highest run-getter in Tests, behind all of Mahela Jayawardene, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Lara. He only got to bat once in the first Test at Lord’s but surpassed both Jayawardene and Chanderpaul at Trent Bridge, where he smashed his 32nd century in Test cricket.

The right-hander is now less than 50 runs away from getting to 12,000 Test runs. It’s a very rare feat: to date, in Test history, only six batters have managed to breach the 12,000 mark. The last person to achieve the feat was Alastair Cook, who got to the landmark in the 2017/18 Ashes series in Australia.
