PCB chief Naqvi prioritises CT 2025 hosting over India tri-series: Reports

When Naqvi was questioned about the Champions trophy at the media interaction on Sunday, he threw the ball in ICC’s court

Pakistan Cricket Board )PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has decided not to focus on his demand of playing a tri-series involving India at a neutral venue and focus mostly on the hosting rights of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

There are less than 75 days are now left for the tournament and yet the schedule, venues and ticketing website have not been made public, putting doubts on whether or not the tournament will even be hosted in Pakistan.

"I prefer not to delve into specifics at this time, as preserving our position is critical. Pakistan is playing a constructive role in the process and will continue to do so," Naqvi was quoted as saying about the possibility of the Tri-Series on December 7 (Saturday), during an interaction with the media in Lahore.

Naqvi, who is also a minister in the Shahbaz Sharif-led Pakistan government, met the Prime Minister on December 8 (Sunday). It was believed that the matter of the Champions Trophy was also discussed in the meeting.

When Naqvi was asked questions about the Champions Trophy at the media interaction on Sunday, he threw the ball in ICC’s court once again. "There was a meeting on Saturday (December 7), and it was postponed. Once the ICC approves the decisions, we will provide all the details,” he said.

“Rest assured, we are doing our best to achieve an outcome that serves the best interests of Pakistan and international cricket. However, the final decision lies with the ICC,” added the PCB chief.

After India’s firm stand on not visiting Pakistan for the Champions Trophy due to security reasons, the idea of a hybrid model, the one adopted for the Asia Cup 2023, has taken centre stage.

However, PCB dropped yet another roadblock to that idea saying that if India will be given preferential treatment by allowing them to play away from Pakistan then the teams from Pakistan should also be allowed the same for future ICC events in India.
