Nonkululeko Mlaba creates history for South Africa

The left-arm spinner became the only South African women’s bowler to pick up 10 wickets in a single edition

Cometh the big stage cometh Nonkululeko Mlaba. The left-arm spinner, who has picked up nine wickets in the tournament before the clash, scalped the big wicket of Tahlia McGrath on October 17 (Thursday). Mlaba has been one of the best spinners in the tournament, and she proved why she’s rated very highly.

The 24-year-old was put under pressure in her first over of the day when McGrath took her on for two boundaries. However, in her second over, the left-arm spinner had the last laugh, slowing the speed and enticing McGrath into a false shot. It was her first wicket of the day and tenth wicket in the tournament.

What’s so special about that?

It was the first time any South African bowler picked up ten wickets in a single edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. Co-incidentally, it also equalled Melie Kerr’s tally of ten wickets in the ongoing edition to become the joint-highest wicket-taker in the competition.

Mlaba, however, couldn’t add another wicket to her tally, finishing with figures of 1/31.
