No Sarfaraz Khan in Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai side for Irani Cup

Suryakumar Yadav too, does not make the cut, despite featuring in the final round of the Duleep Trophy

On September 24 (Tuesday), Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Ajinkya Rahane will lead Mumbai in the upcoming Irani Cup 2024-25 against Rest of India (RoI), which is set to begin October 1 onwards. The match will be played at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

However, Sarfaraz Khan, who has been picked for the second Test against Bangladesh has failed to make the cut. However, a release from BCCI states that the Mumbai batter will be released to take part in the Irani Cup clash.

In the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, India picked KL Rahul ahead of Sarfaraz, despite the Mumbaikar scoring 200 runs in five innings against England. He then played a couple of rounds of Duleep Trophy, where he scored 9, 46 and 16 in his three innings. Another notable absentee is Suryakumar Yadav, who, in his two innings, scored 5 and 16.

Shardul Thakur, Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian, who also played in the Duleep Trophy, are part of the Mumbai team. Moreover, Siddhesh Lad, who plied his trade with Goa last season, is also back in the squad. The 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre has been added to the squad on the back of his impressive 145 against Karnataka in Cooch Behar Trophy 2024 final.

Mumbai claimed their 42nd Ranji Trophy title last season, beating Vidarbha in the final at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
