On October 2 (Tuesday), news emerged that Mohammed Shami was set to be a major doubt for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after sustaining a fresh knee injury while rehabbing at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
Times of India reported that Shami’s knees had ‘flared up’ during rehab, and the report claimed that the speedster was set to spend at least another six to eight weeks in recovery, ruling him out of the New Zealand Tests and putting him in serious doubt for the tour of Australia.
However, Shami himself has quashed the report of the ‘fresh injury’, taking to X (formerly Twitter) last night to clarify that he has not picked up a new injury.
“Why these type of baseless rumors? I'm working hard and trying my level best to recover. Neither the BCCI nor me have mentioned that I am out of the Border Gavaskar series,” Shami wrote on X.
The team India speedster further slammed the media and urged fans not to spread fake news peddled by ‘unofficial sources’.
“I request the public to stop paying attention to such news from unofficial sources. Please stop and don’t spread such fake fake fake & fake news, especially without my statement,” Shami added.
The BCCI are yet to announce the squad for the three-Test series against New Zealand, starting October 16. It remains to be seen if Shami is fit enough to make the cut for the series.
Shami has not played any professional cricket since the 2023 World Cup final.
