The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the squad to face West Indies in the three-match ODI series, following the ongoing second Test between the two sides.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz will continue to lead the ODI side in the absence of the regular skipper, Najmul Hossain Shanto. Shanto is recovering from a groin strain he sustained during the ODIs against Afghanistan last month. Mehidy is also leading Bangladesh in the ongoing Test series for the same reason.
Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan also missed out with BCB president Faruque Ahmed, who said the star allrounder was not "in a mental state to play for the country." Shakib last played for Bangladesh during the Test series in India. Since then, he has skipped the Tests versus South Africa and three ODIs against Afghanistan and is now not part of the West Indies tour.
In other notable pointers, the trio of Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mustafizur Rahman was unavailable. Hridoy and Rahim are recovering from groin and finger injuries, respectively, while Rahman has taken a break due to personal reasons. Additionally, Zakir Hasan too has been dropped.
Litton Das missed the ODI series against Afghanistan but returns to the side now with Parvez Hossain Emon, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Hasan Mahmud, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib also included.
Shakib has retired from T20Is and Tests but has hinted to play the next big ODI tournament — the Champions Trophy scheduled in February-March next year. Considering the same, Ahmed said Shakib is still part of the plans but needs time to prepare for international cricket.
"Right now, Shakib is still in the list. We hope that the issues get solved in the way he wants. Definitely, he still possesses the capability to play for the national team. Playing for a franchise and playing for the country is not the same thing. You need preparation and also you really need to gel with the team. Since he can't do those things, I don't think he is in a mental state to play for the country. Because of that, we have left this thing up to him," the BCB President cleared the air around Shakib’s absence from the squad.
Bangladesh are currently experiencing a rough time in the Test series in the Caribbean. They lost the first Test by 201 runs and were bowled out for 164 batting first in the second Test. They have yet to cross the 200-run mark as a team in the series.
The two-match Test series will be followed by three ODIs scheduled on December 8, 10 and 12.
