Maxwell to miss England game after golf accident

The Australian all-rounder suffered a concussion after falling off the back of a golf cart on Monday

Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of Australia’s next 2023 World Cup game against England in Ahmedabad due to suffering a concussion after falling off the back of a golf cart on Monday (October 31). This is his second freak injury in the space of 12 months.

The Australian all-rounder was holding onto the back of a golf cart on the way back from the clubhouse to the team bus in the dark and suffered a concussion and some facial bruising after losing his grip. It’s being reported that Maxwell will now be under concussion protocols for six to eight days.

"He's been honest with the information he's provided. He's doing fine, he'll start some light exercises today and we feel as though it will be a reasonably straightforward return to play protocol. Suppose the fortunate part was there was no other injury sustained which could have been a lot worse that it currently is,” said head coach Andrew McDonald.

"Think it rattled everyone to be fair once it came to the conclusion there was a concussion and he was going to miss a game. There was nothing untoward in the behaviour throughout the day, it was a clear cut accident and unfortunately, it's compromised what we are doing as a team."

Last year in November, Maxwell broke his leg while at a birthday party in Melbourne and still hasn’t completely recovered from the injury. He has been an integral part of the Australian line-up since making his return.

Apart from smoking a 40-ball century against the Netherlands, Maxwell has also been playing the role of a second spinner in the absence of Ashton Agar. He has only managed to take four wickets in six innings but has been Australia’s most economical bowler, going at an impressive economy of 4.82.

One of Marcus Stoinis or Cameron Green will likely play against England on Saturday (November 4). "They'll be a small reshuffle, clearly, around the back end of our batting and no doubt that compromises a bit of our bowling and the way Glenn has performed with the ball," McDonald said.

"There's no doubt it leaves us a fraction exposed at the back end in terms of how Glenn's been performing but Marcus Stoinis does become available all things going well at training today."

Pat Cummins and Co. have won their last four encounters and are scheduled to play Afghanistan and Bangladesh after taking on England.
