Lucknow Super Giants’ new INR 75 lakh signing, Matthew Breetzke, impressed one and all on February 10 against New Zealand, smashing 150 on his ODI debut, the highest score by a debutant in ODI history. The right-handed batter, who opened the innings, smashed a hundred off 128 balls, playing a crucial role for South Africa at the top of the order.
The LSG star became the first batter in the history of the 50-over format to notch up 150, besting West Indies' batter Desmond Haynes' record of 148 that he hit against Australia in St John's, all the way back in 1978.

Breetzke joined a unique list, becoming only the fourth South African to score a century on ODI debut, joining Colin Ingram, Temba Bavuma, and Reeza Hendricks. While Bavuma scored a 113 against Ireland in 2016, Hendricks got there in 2018 against Sri Lanka, a series in which he dominated proceedings.

Despite wickets falling around him, Breetzke stood as tall as a tower, stitching a 100-run partnership alongside fellow DSG teammate Wiaan Mulder in a crucial fourth-wicket stand. The right-hander had smashed eight fours and four sixes when he created the record, taking New Zealand’s bowling unit head-on.

Even New Zealand’s skipper Mitchell Santner was impressed with the right-hander knock, shaking his hands during an over break. Eventually, the right-handed opener was dismissed for 150 but not before he tormented the Black Caps in their clash in Lahore.
