Lanka Premier League introduces Power Blast overs

The LPL 2024, scheduled for July 1-21, will partially overlap with the USA's Major League Cricket

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 season has introduced two innovative "power-blast overs" for the 16th and 17th overs of each innings. Teams will permit a maximum of four fielders outside the 30-yard circle during this time. The traditional powerplay in the first six overs will remain unchanged, allowing only two fielders outside the circle.

"We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year,” Samantha Dodanwela, the LPL's tournament director, said in the statement. "This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategize effectively to make the most of this period."

The LPL 2024, scheduled for July 1-21, will partially overlap with the USA's Major League Cricket, which boasts a stronger international player lineup.

The fifth edition of the tournament will feature 20 league matches among five franchises, culminating in three playoffs and a final. Each team will clash twice in the league stage, with the top four advancing to the playoffs. Notably, Dambulla Sixers, a new franchise, joins the fray after a change in ownership following the arrest of a previous co-owner under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act.
