Kwena Maphaka replaces injured Coetzee for second Test against Sri Lanka

Coetzee’s groin injury also rules him out of the all-format tour against Pakistan

Gerald Coetzee’s battle with injuries continued, as the all-rounder has been ruled out of South Africa’s second Test against Sri Lanka, later this week. The 24-year-old pacer experienced discomfort while bowling on the fourth day of the first Test in Durban, which has now been revealed as a ‘right groin muscle strain’.

With the all-rounder not expected to return before six weeks time, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have named the Lions pacer Kwena Maphaka to the squad. The youngster, who is highly rated in the country, might get a chance to realise his dreams of making a Test debut if the selectors see it in that direction.

Coetzee will not only miss the second Test but will also just be a spectator for the upcoming all-format tour against Pakistan. After the win in the first Test, South Africa would be hoping to complete the sweep in Gqeberha on December 5.

Squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Aiden Markram, Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton, and Kyle Verreynne
