Koncharoenkai stars as Thailand begin Asia Cup campaign with win

The wicketkeeper batter registered a match-winning 35-ball 40 to help Thailand pick up a convincing win

Thailand kicked off their Women's Asia Cup 2024 campaign with a bang, defeating Malaysia by 22 runs in an electrifying match in Dambulla. Opting to bat first, Thailand posted a competitive 133/6, thanks to Nannapat Koncharoenkai’s brilliant 40 off 35 balls. Malaysia’s Mahirah Izzati Ismail was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 16 runs.

In response, Malaysia couldn’t quite keep up the pace. Captain Winifred Duraisingam scored a valiant 22, and Wan Julia put up a fight with 52 off 53 balls, but it wasn’t enough to chase down the target.

Thailand’s bowlers were on point, with Onnicha Kamchomphu taking 2 wickets for 20 runs and Chanida Sutthiruang keeping it tight with 1 for 12. Despite a spirited effort, Malaysia finished at 111/8 in their 20 overs.

Koncharoenkai’s all-round performance earned her the Player of the Match award. With this win, Thailand have set the tone for their tournament, blending aggressive batting and disciplined bowling to perfection.
