After putting up 102 for the third wicket against Australia in the fourth Test in Melbourne, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal were involved in a terrible mix-up, and the latter was dismissed for a well-compiled 82. Jaiswal hit Scott Boland straight to mid-on and immediately called for a run. Kohli took a stride or two but then immediately looked at the ball and turned back, leaving the 22-year-old stranded.
Jaiswal was not too pleased as he walked past Kohli, and gestured to him that was his call as he was running towards the danger end. So, whose call was it and who is at fault here? Let's look at some of the renowned faces sharing their opinions:
Parthiv Patel on Cricbuzz: "If we go to the cricketing fundamentals: if the ball is behind you, then the call is of striker, and here the call was of Yashasi Jaiswal, there is no doubt in that. But the mid-on was standing in front of Virat Kohli. So I don't think Virat Kohli was expecting that by hitting here Yashasvi Jaiswal will call for a run. So the mistake I think, in my opinion, Yashasvi Jaiswal made a mistake; he looked in a hurry."
Sunil Gavaskar: "It would have been a quick run, and somebody like Virat Kohli would definitely have made it. But the thing was, he looked at the fielder. When you look at the fielder, when you turn, you've lost that vital second. And so naturally, you then think, 'No, I want to be able to make it.' Your balance is completely off. And it would have been a tight run. I think at that stage, why do you need to take a run that carries an element of risk? You're batting well, runs are coming."
"At that stage, the risk was not really necessary. But it could have been completed only because Kohli is such a fantastic runner between the wickets."
Nathan Lyon on ABC: "It was probably one of the best barbecues I've seen. It came out of the blue. They were doing it pretty easy out there.
"I know pressure does funny things, and we were able to build that little bit of pressure – that's what it felt like, anyway. Silly run-outs are coach killers, aren't they?"
Steven Smith: "They were both looking really good. Jaiswal played a nice innings today, aggressive, hit any loose ball that was bowled basically and Virat looked like he was in for a bit of a masterclass, the way he started and the patience that he showed.
"So, at that stage, we'd probably take any of them."
Sanjay Manjrekar: “Virat made a mistake and was then trying to justify himself by saying that he was looking back. Yashasvi is livid. It was his call, and Kohli should have responded."
Aakash Chopra: "Run out was a massive moment. It was both their mistake. There were just 15 minutes till stumps. The call is usually of the batter [on strike] when you hit it to mid-off or mid-on because the non-striker is the closest to the fielder.
"But there was no run there. Even if the ball had hit the stumps directly, it would have been out. Kohli's mistake was that he was ball-watching and didn't trust his partner's call."
