Jos Buttler, England’s white-ball skipper, has been ruled out of Australia T20Is starting September 11 due to a right calf injury. The injury has also put doubts over him playing the ODI series against the same opposition.
While pacer Jamie Overton has been called up as his replacement in the T20I squad, batter Jordan Cox has been added in the ODI squad as his cover. The three T20I series ends on September 15, and the five-match ODI series begins just four days later on September 19.
This ODI series is crucial for England from the Champions Trophy perspective and also because Buttler’s side hasn’t had a good outing in the 50-over format lately. Their performance was relatively poor in the 2023 ODI World Cup, and after a semifinal defeat in the T20 World Cup, the axe fell on the white-ball coach Matthew Pott.
Marcus Trescothick, who shares a very good dynamic with Buttler, is the interim white ball coach until Brendon McCullum takes up the full-time white ball coaching responsibilities from January 2025.
In Buttler’s absence, opening batter Phil Salt will captain the T20I side. Salt also captained the Manchester Originals in The Hundred this season.
