Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss Champions Trophy group stage due to back swelling: Report

The India pacer suffered the injury in Australia, where he sent down 151.2 overs across the five Tests

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the group stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to back swelling, according to a report on the Indian Express. Bumrah picked up the injury in Australia, where he picked up 32 wickets in the five-match Test series in his 151.2 overs.

He did not take the field for the final innings of the Sydney Test, where he is believed to have suffered a back spasm. According to the same report, Bumrah is expected to head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where his progress will be monitored. He is expected to be fit by the first week of March.

“He [Bumrah] will be going to NCA for his rehabilitation. The initial report says he doesn’t have a fracture but has swelling on his back. So, the NCA will monitor his recovery, and he will be there for three weeks. But even after that, he will have to play a match or two, even if they are practice games organised to check his match fitness,” a source told Indian Express

As a result, the Indian selectors are unclear whether to pick Bumrah in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy. The deadline for announcing the squad is January 12 (Sunday), but it is understood that the BCCI has sought an extension. However, changes can be made until February 12, according to the norms set by the ICC.

The other option is to announce the squad with Bumrah as part of the reserves.

India take on Bangladesh (February 20), Pakistan (February 23) and New Zealand (March 2) in their group-stage fixtures at the Champions Trophy. All of India's matches will be played in Dubai, after their refusal to play in Pakistan - the hosts of the tournament.
