It’s Pakistan vs Rain Gods for Super Eight Qualification

Along with hoping for no rain and two losses for US, Pakistan also need to win their last game against Ireland at any cost to reach the next stage of the World Cup

After three games in the competition, Pakistan finally won their first game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Canada by seven wickets.

It is safe to say that it has been a forgettable tournament for the team whose supporters have popularised the term ‘Qudrat Ka Nizam’ (Laws of the nature) to comment on the unpredictable nature of Pakistani performances. They failed to defend 160 against the United States of America and then failed to chase 120 against India in New York.

However, this time, the Pakistan fans would hope that nature stays away from their team, as their qualification rests heavily on it being a complete game when they take on Ireland on June 16 (Sunday) in Lauderhill, Florida.

However, The Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida, is in grave danger of witnessing washout games as rain is currently falling. There’s a 90% chance of rain even in the June 11 (US time) game between Sri Lanka and Nepal.

The forecast for the next few days isn’t great either. Except for June 16, where the precipitation chances are 80%, as per weather prediction website Accuweather, all other days of the week have more than 90% chances of rain. With such a forecast, there’s also a threat of flooding in the city.

Under these circumstances, most games at this venue are in danger of being rained out. After the Sri Lanka-Nepal game, the USA and Ireland are scheduled to play here on June 14 (Friday). India will take on Canada on June 15 (Saturday) before Pakistan and Ireland face off on June 16 (Sunday).

However, if the Pakistan game against Ireland isn’t a washout, Pakistan would have to compulsorily win it. They would also have to hope that the USA loses both of their remaining games. Even if they win one or any of their games are a washout, they’ll end up with more points than Pakistan (as they already have four points in two games, and Pakistan just two after three games).

Meanwhile, Pakistan would also hope their game against Ireland isn’t a washout, as that will limit them to three points, and the USA already has four.

Regarding the NRR battle between Pakistan and the USA, the gap (0.565) between the two games is significantly less. If Pakistan win against Ireland and the USA lose either of their games, that difference will more or less become obsolete as a decisive factor in qualification because of the point difference between the two teams.

In the end, rather than looking towards the USA, the Men in Green would have to look at the heavens above to ensure that they qualify for the Super Eights.
