Sharad Vesawkar may have been born in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but there aren’t too many people who know Nepal cricket inside out like the 36-year-old. Vesawkar has been one of the long-standing stalwarts of cricket in Nepal, and the Nepal Premier League (NPL) couldn’t have come at a better time.
The 36-year-old, who is playing for Chitwan Rhinos, revealed that the tournament is a ‘dream come true’ moment for the country's senior players and insisted that NPL will only grow in stature over the next few years.
“It was a dream for us to organise this tournament, and it will only grow in size in the future,” Vesawkar told the broadcasters during the clash against Sudarpaschim Royals.
Despite being 36, Vesawkar has been quite active in Nepal’s cricketing circles and has already played a winning hand for the Chitwan Rhinos here in the tournament. So, until his knees give up, Vesawkar isn’t going anywhere.
When asked about the atmosphere in the tournament, Vesawkar insisted that NPL is a ‘festival’.
“It has been amazing. It has been a festival for Nepal. Absolutely, everyone is contributing to the team. I have been sharing my knowledge. Bopara and Tanvir are doing the same thing. We are all here to help the youngsters,” he added.
After the loss against Karnali Yaks in a close encounter the other day, Vesawkar insisted that a win against Sudarpaschim Royals would balance the tournament.
“Looking to win this game. Sudarpaschim [Royals] are on top of the table right now; it will balance the tournament. Look at the crowd; they have been amazing; they have been coming out in numbers every game. You can hear them.”
