The 26th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) was held recently in Multan, Pakistan, and some historical and key decisions were taken in the meeting, joined by the 11 member nations.
The biggest decision was starting a Women’s T20 World Cup for the blind. India will host the inaugural tournament, but it will be held at a neutral venue or in a hybrid model.
It’s understood that this arrangement has been made so that the Indian and Pakistani blind cricket teams can continue to play the sport against each other. The administrative call is made in light of the recent controversy surrounding the Indian men’s cricket team travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in February 2025.
Apart from this historic decision, the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup for the Blind is now scheduled for 2027, with the 2025 AGM deciding on the venue and model for the tournament. Meanwhile, the WBCC also made it mandatory for all international cricket tournaments for the blind to adhere to the IBSA (International Blind Sports Federation) Sight Classification rules, ensuring uniformity and inclusivity across the sport.
In addition, the CABI (Cricket Association for the Blind in India) has decided to lead efforts to promote cricket for the blind in the USA and UAE, facilitating the formation of men’s and women’s Cricket Teams in these regions.
Dr. Mahantesh G Kivadasannavar, Chairman of CABI, remarked on the significance of these resolutions.
“The decisions made at the 26th AGM of the World Blind Cricket Council mark a significant turning point for the growth and global reach of cricket for the blind. Hosting the first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup is a milestone and a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
“At CABI, we are proud to lead these transformative initiatives, including expanding the game to new geographies like the USA and UAE. Together, we are building a future where cricket for the blind continues to inspire and uplift lives across the world."
