Jasprit Bumrah set to lead India in Ireland T20Is

The pacer last played for India in September 2022 and missed the T20 World Cup and the subsequent WTC Final through injury

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Ireland and announced Jasprit Bumrah as the skipper for the series. Bumrah will lead the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya.

Bumrah last played for India in the third T20I against Australia on September 25, 2022, and missed the subsequent T20 World Cup in 2022 and the World Test Championship final earlier this year.

With all major players missing from the squad, BCCI have picked players who have done well in the recent IPL seasons. With major players resting, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal are understandably picked as the first-choice openers. The squad also comprises Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Ravi Bishnoi, amongst others who have left a mark in the IPL 2023.

Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson are picked as wicketkeeping options. Alongside Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna has made a comeback to the setup. Both Bumrah and Krishna were rehabilitated at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, and the Ireland series provides them with some vital game-time ahead of the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, starting August 30.

The three T20Is will be played in Dublin (Malahide) on August 18, 20 and 23.

India squad for Ireland T20Is: Jasprit Bumrah ( c ), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan
