On September 8 (Sunday), Rishabh Pant finally made his well-awaited return to India's red-ball scheme of things for the first time since December 25, 2022. Ironically for Pant, it comes against Bangladesh, the same opposition against whom he played his last red-ball game before the dreaded accident. If Pant goes on to play the Chennai Test, he would playing red-ball cricket for India after 637 days.
Alongside Pant, Uttar Pradesh pacer Yash Dayal forced his way into the Indian setup for the first Test of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh in BCCI's 16-member squad.
KL Rahul, who got injured after the first Test of the last Test series India played against England in March this year, has returned to the side, while Shreyas Iyer remains on the sidelines despite an impressive fifty in the opening round of the Duleep Trophy.
Virat Kohli, who also missed the entire five-match series against England, has been named in the squad for the first Test. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian batting order includes Sarfaraz Khan, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal alongside Rahul, Kohli and Pant.
Dayal is the only fresh inclusion in the bowling lineup with Mukesh Kumar making way for him. Akash Deep was part of the Indian squad for the last Test against England in Dharamsala. Both Dayal and Akash performed well in the first round of the Duleep Trophy with the ball. Rajat Patidar and Srikar Bharat are the other two names missing from the Indian squad from that Test.
The first Test against Bangladesh will begin on September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
