History in Galle as Kamindu Mendis equals Sir Don Bradman

Kamindu Mendis has become the joint second-fastest in history to 1,000 Test runs

History has been scripted at the Galle International Stadium as Kamindu Mendis has become the joint second-fastest batter in history, and the fastest in 75 years, to score 1,000 runs in Test cricket. Kamindu has brought up the landmark in his 13th innings, going level with Sir Don Bradman who also got to the landmark in 13 innings, back in 1930. He got there in style, with a six straight down the ground off Rachin Ravindra and finished unbeaten on 182 - his highest Test score.

Sri Lanka declared right after that, getting past 600 in the first innings. The record for the fastest to 1,000 runs in Tests belongs to West Indies’ Sir Everton Weekes and England’s Herbert Sutcliffe, who both brought up their 1,000th Test run in their 12th innings.

Kamindu, notably, has become the fastest-ever Asian to 1,000 Test runs. That record had previously belonged to India’s Vinod Kambli, who had taken just 14 innings get to the landmark.

It’s record after record for the 25-year-old who, earlier in the day, became the first cricketer debuting in the 21st century to score five Test centuries in his first 8 Tests.

The left-hander already has the joint-most 50-plus scores after eight Tests. India’s Sunil Gavaskar is the only other cricketer to have amassed nine 50-plus scores in the first eight Tests.
