He deserves that place: Rohit confirms Rahul will open in Adelaide

Rohit said that it was the opening partnership between Rahul and Jaiswal in the second innings at Perth that turned the game in India’s favour

India skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that KL Rahul will open the innings at the Adelaide Oval alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the pink-ball Test starting December 6 (Friday). Rohit also hinted that he would be batting in the middle order.

"(Rahul) will be opening the batting. I'll be somewhere in the middle. Those two guys at the top – just looking at this one Test match (in Perth) – they batted brilliantly,” Rohit said in the pre-match press conference on December 5 (Thursday).

Reasoning why he did not want to change the combination and why he should be batting in the middle order, Rohit said, "I was at home with my newborn in my arms and I was watching how KL batted and it was brilliant, to be honest. I felt there was no need to change that now.”

"Maybe in the future things will be different. Based on what KL has shown outside of India, he probably deserves that place at this point. It was pretty simple for me – personally not easy – but for the team, it made a lot of sense,” added the 37-year-old.

Rohit also hinted that Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who missed out in the Perth Test, will be playing in the future games of the five-match series.

"But I certainly see them playing a huge role in the rest of the series. What they bring to the table will never be written off. They are quality players and whatever success Indian cricket has had over the past few years is largely because of these two guys as well,” he said.

India lead the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 1-0 after winning the game at Perth by 295 runs.
