Harmeet Singh picks up USA's first wicket in a World Cup

The left-arm spinner, who made his T20I debut earlier this year got a crucial breakthrough for his side after Canada got off to a steady start

It was a historic moment for the United States of America (USA) at the Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas as they got their first-ever wicket in a World Cup, courtesy of Harmeet Singh. Canada opening batter Aaron Johnson, who was looking in good touch smashed the left-arm spinner down the ground, where Nitish Kumar, an ex-Canada player himself, pouched a simple catch. This is USA's first-ever World Cup game, be it T20 or 50 overs.

Johnson was dismissed for 23 off 16 deliveries, and he put on 43 for the first wicket with Navneet Dhaliwal. This is the second time Harmeet has gotten the better of Johnson. He was previously trapped leg-before by Harmeet at the Prairie View Cricket Complex in Houston, Texas when the two sides met in a bilateral series ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Overall, Johnson has scored just five runs at 2.5 in the 14 balls he has faced Harmeet in T20 cricket, scoring at a strike rate of only 35.7.

This is just the sixth time Johnson has opened the innings with Dhaliwal, and they have put on 177 runs at a run-rate of 8.23.

Harmeet, on the other hand, who won the Under-19 World Cup with India in 2012, has been plying his trade in the US since 2020. However, he made his T20 International (T20I) debut - against Canada - in April this year. He also featured in US' historic series win over Bangladesh recently, in which he went wicketless, but scored an unbeaten 33 off just 13 deliveries to help his side to a five-wicket victory.

After this game, the US will take on Pakistan on June 6 (Thursday) at the same venue, while Canada take on Ireland in New York on June 7 (Friday)
