CPL 2024: Pooran and Noor shine; Russell & Powell fail to deliver

Here is a complete round-up of the 12th edition of CPL which saw Saint Lucia Kings win their first ever CPL title

The 12th edition of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) came to a successful end on October 6 (Sunday) with Saint Lucia Kings lifting their first ever title. They managed to beat the 2023 champions Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final after a match winning 88-run unbeaten partnership between Aaron Jones and Roston Chase, chasing 139.

Top performers of CPL 2024

With the season done and dusted, let us look at the players who had an excellent campaign, the ones who did not live up to their reputation and those who made a name for themselves during the tournament.

Hits of CPL 2024

Nicholas Pooran (Trinbago Knight Riders)

The destructive left-handed keeper batter has been the best batter in T20 cricket in 2024, scoring over 2000 runs across various tournaments. In CPL 2024, he became only the second batter to score 500+ runs in an edition as he finished the season as the highest run scorer, amassing 504 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 170. During the season, Pooran went past Mohammad Rizwan’s 2021 tally of 2036 runs to become the highest run scorer in T20s in a calendar year.

Quinton de Kock (Barbados Royals)

The South African legend finally clicked in a T20 competition after ordinary performances in IPL, SA20 and BBL. He ended the season as the second-highest run scorer, amassing 453 runs at a terrific strike rate of 162. He was a major reason behind Barbados Royals keeping themselves in the top three spots on the points table throughout the season.

Noor Ahmad (Saint Lucia Kings)

Noor Ahmad made a massive impact in Saint Lucia Kings' victorious campaign, being the go-to man for wickets. The left-arm wrist-spinner took 22 wickets in total, the most by any bowler CPL 2024. He took at least two wickets in eight of the 12 games. His 3/19 was a key reason behind Guyana’s sub-par total in the final. Deservedly, Noor was named the Player of the Tournament.

Gudakesh Motie (Guyana Amazon Warriors)

Gudakesh Motie showcased his ability to adapt to different formats as the left-arm spinner took 17 wickets in 13 games at an excellent strike rate of 15.6. Additionally, his economy was over 9.00 RPO in just one of the 13 games, meaning he was ultra-effective even when he did not pick wickets for the side.

Misses of CPL 2024

Rovman Powell (Barbados Royals)

The Barbados Royals captain had a forgettable CPL 2024 campaign as a batter. He averaged just 22.6, scoring 158 runs in 10 inns at an underwhelming strike rate of 119. He managed to cross 50 only once. As a captain, Powell had a great season in the first half, with the Royals winning five of their first six games. However, things went south in the second half as they managed to win only one of the six games. Barbados somehow managed to beat Trinbago in the eliminator in controversial fashion but were hammered by Guyana in the second qualifier.

Jason Holder (Barbados Royals)

Jason Holder has been in the midst of an extended slump, and CPL 2024 added to his woes. The former WI captain had a quiet CPL 2024 as he picked up just 10 wickets in 12 games. He picked multiple wickets only in 3/12 matches and went wicketless in five games. He failed to pick a wicket in both the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, ending the season on a low. With the bat, Holder averaged just 16.00 and struck at less than 115.

Andre Russell (Trinbago Knight Riders)

Andre Russell came into CPL 2024 on the back of a terrible Hundred edition for the London Spirit. And in this tournament as well, he proved to be a liability with the ball, picking just one wicket in eight games. With the bat, even though he smashed at a strike rate of 184, Russell failed to deliver in important games. In fact, he only had two 30+ scores in the entire season and averaged just 23 with the bat in hand.

Mohammad Amir (Antigua & Barbuda Falcons)

Mohammad Amir statistically had his worst CPL season ever in 2024 as the Pakistan pacer managed to take only eight wickets in 10 games. As the leader of the Falcons bowling attack, Amir went wicketless five times and his side lost each of those five matches. The left-armer managed to pick a three-wicket haul only in one of the 10 games that he featured in.

Breakout Performer of CPL 2024

Shamar Springer (Antigua & Barbuda Falcons)

Shamar Springer showcased an excellent pace bowling performance in CPL 2024. The 26-year-old pacer from Barbados picked up 12 wickets at a terrific strike rate of 11.9. He made good use of the bouncer, with 33% of the wickets he picked in the competition being shorter ones. In particular, he used the slower bouncer to good effect. He picked wickets in all three phases (2, 5 & 5), showcasing his ability to bowl across phases.
