Gaby Lewis to lead Ireland Women against England

Meanwhile, Kate Cross will lead England, featuring a lot of uncapped players as the mainstays gear up for the T20 World Cup

Laura Delany, the permanent skipper of the Ireland Women, who injured her ankle during the recently completed ODI series against Sri Lanka, hasn’t made the cut for the upcoming ODIs and T20Is against England.

In her absence, Gaby Lewis will lead the side. She also captained against Sri Lanka after Delany’s injury-enforced exit. Otherwise, the Irish squad looks mostly the same from the Sri Lanka series, where they won the ODI series 2-1. The two-match T20I series was drawn 1-1.

Ireland will also play three ODIs and two T20Is against England, just like Sri Lanka. The three ODIs, beginning September 7, will be held at Stormont, while the two T20Is will be played at Clontarf, where the English women haven’t played since 1995.

Clara O’Brien, the National Women’s Selector, expressed her disappointment that Delany’s injury was more serious than earlier anticipated. However, she also showed her faith in the side chosen for the upcoming series.

England announced their squad for this tour a day before Ireland. Kate Cross was selected to lead this squad, which includes seven uncapped players looking to make their international debut, including Georgia Davis and Ryana Macdonald-Gay. This will also be the first time that Cross will get the chance to lead an England side.

Interestingly, this English women’s side that will travel to Ireland will be coached by another Jon Lewis (not the women’s head coach and former Gloucestershire seamer Jon Lewis), the former Durham batter who also coaches the England A side. The other Lewis will be busy with the England Women’s squad selected for the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
