History was scripted at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on December 15 (Sunday) as England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt smashed the fastest hundred in Women’s Tests, getting to the three-figure mark off just 96 balls. Sciver-Brunt became the first and only woman cricketer to score a Test century inside 100 balls.
She broke the record of Sri Lanka’s Chamani Seneviratna, who recorded a 106-ball century against Pakistan back in 1998 in Colombo. Incidentally, that was the only Test Seneviratna played. She later shifted base to UAE and represented them as recently as 2022.
At the Mangaung Oval, though, Sciver-Brunt wasn’t the only centurion. 26-year-old Maia Bouchier also hammered a hundred on Test debut. She got to the landmark in 124 balls, making it the fifth-fastest hundred in Test history.
Four of the five fastest tons in Test history have now been scored against South Africa, all astonishingly coming this year. Earlier this year, Shafali Verma (113 balls) and Smriti Mandhana (122 balls) also smashed rapid tons against South Africa.
On the day, both Sciver-Brunt and Bouchier weren’t able to turn their hundreds into bigger scores. While Sciver-Brunt was run-out for 128, Bouchier perished for 126 but not before putting England in a dominant position.
