England announce ODI, T20I squads for India tour

The ODI squad, which is the same as the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, features the return of Joe Root, who has not played any 50-over games in a year

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the Three Lions’ ODI and T20I squads for the white-ball tour of India starting next month. The visitors have opted to go full-strength on both fronts, considering the 20-day series as preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy.

The ODI squad, which is the same as the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, features the return of Joe Root, who has not played any 50-over games in a year and last played an ODI in the 2023 World Cup at Eden Gardens against Pakistan. But while Root is back, there is no place for Ben Stokes, who will be missing both the India series and the Champions Trophy due to a hamstring injury.

“Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes was not considered for selection as he continues to be assessed following a left hamstring injury sustained during the third Test match against New Zealand earlier this month,” the ECB confirmed in a release.

Jos Buttler will captain both the ODI and T20I sides and will have a strong core at his disposal in the form of Jofra Archer, Liam Livingstone, Harry Brook, Adil Rashid, Ben Duckett, Phil Salt and Mark Wood. Youngsters Jamie Smith and Jacob Bethell are also part of both ODIs and T20Is, as are pacers Gus Atkinson and Saqib Mahmood. All-rounder Jamie Overton has also been named in both the T20I squad and the squad for the ODIs and Champions Trophy.

Root and Rehan Ahmed will be part of only one of the two squads. While Root has exclusively been picked for the 50-over games, Ahmed will only join the Three Lions for the T20Is.

The tour of India will begin next month with five T20Is, with the first T20I being played at the Eden Gardens on January 22.

The three-match ODI series will be played from February 6 to February 12. The ICC Champions Trophy, meanwhile, will kick off on February 19.
