David Warner's leadership ban lifted by Cricket Australia

As a result, the southpaw will now be allowed to lead Sydney Thunder in the BBL

Cricket Australia (CA) announced on October 25 (Friday) that they have lifted the leadership ban imposed on David Warner. This opens the door for Warner to lead Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25. Warner was banned from playing for a year and handed a lifetime leadership ban by CA for his role in the Sandpapergate episode in South Africa in 2018.

The three-member independent review panel noted “the respectful and contrite tone of his (Warner’s) responses, as well as the content impressed the Review Panel and led it to the unanimous view that he was sincere and genuine in acknowledging responsibility for the conduct and in his statement that he had extreme remorse for his conduct."

The panel also noted Warner's potential impact on Australian cricket if he was allowed to groom several young players under his tutelage.

“The contribution that Mr Warner has made, and can make in the future, towards the development of young cricketers in Australia if they were given the opportunity to be led by Mr Warner, his important continuing role in fostering interest in cricket especially with the South Asian community in Australia and generally," the panel further observed.

Warner had a chance to overturn his leadership ban in 2022 in the hope of leading the Australia T20 International (T20I) side in the latter stages of his career but he decided to withdraw in the end. Despite his CA ban, he led Sunrisers  Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He retired from international cricket after the T20 World Cup 2024.

CA chief executive Nick Hockley said the process has been tweaked since then and is delighted that Warner had once chosen to go through it again "In 2022 we updated the Code of Conduct to ensure there was a fair and rigorous process in place for all players and player support personnel to have long-term sanctions reviewed.

“I am pleased David has chosen to have his sanction reviewed and that he will be eligible to take up leadership positions in Australian Cricket this summer.”

So, will Warner lead Thunder in the upcoming season of BBL? The team's general manager, Trent Copeland, says there will certainly be conversations around it.

"The fact he can be on the table as a captaincy option is definitely going to be spoken about," Copeland said.

"Internally, the chats have already happened in terms of assessing if that will be a good decision. I think that's a no-brainer. Everyone who knows Davey and has watched him over the years has seen him be a great captain and leader, particularly with the bat in hand."

The next season of BBL will get underway from December 15 and will go on till January 25.
