Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction, alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the amount these players will get is not decided yet, but CSK can lose up to INR 65 crore in securing them ahead of the mega-auction. Each team is allotted a budget of INR 120 crore. If there are no additions to the aforementioned, CSK will have one right-to-match (RTM) card available to draft one player back into their squad during the auction.
Dhoni will be retained as an uncapped player after IPL brought back the rule, which enables Indian players who played their last international match five years ago or more to participate as uncapped players. Once the rule was re-instated, the CSK owners were in conversation with Dhoni, the heartbeat of the side, to be available for the forthcoming seasons. Dhoni played his last match for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Gaikwad, meanwhile, led the team in the 2024 season, during which CSK finished fifth on the points table. Jadeja, meanwhile, has been with the side since 2012. Dube and Pathirana both have been one of the most impactful players for the five-time champions in the last few seasons.
While October 31 is the deadline for all franchises to announce their retentions, the dates for the mega auction are yet to be finalized.
