Misbah-ul-Haq
Misbah-ul-Haq had an excellent T20 World Cup 2007, where he almost took Pakistan over the line in the final. The following year, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bought him for INR 50 lakh.
In his only season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the former Pakistan skipper slammed 117 runs at a strike rate of 144.44 with a highest score of 47*. All in all, Misbah went on to play 162 T20s – 39 of them for Pakistan – finishing with nearly 3,500 runs at a strike rate of 116.48.
Sridharan Sriram
All-rounder S Sriram played just two matches in the IPL across two seasons. In 2010, he played for RCB against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru, where he scored 27 off 29, opening the innings.
The following season, he turned up for Delhi Capitals (DC), conceded 25 runs off his only over and scored four off seven against Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Overall in T20s, Sriram hit 223 runs at a strike rate of under 100, and his slow left-arm spin fetched him just four scalps, making it an underwhelming career.
Tatenda Taibu
One of the youngest Test captains ever, Tatenda Taibu, played three matches in the IPL – all in 2008 – for KKR.
Across the three games, he scored 31 runs at a strike rate of 119.2, with KKR winning all three of them. Overall in T20s, Taibu scored 887 T20 runs, 259 of which came for Zimbabwe between 2007 and 2012.
Sanjay Bangar
Across two seasons in 2008 and 2009, the former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar played 11 matches for Deccan Chargers and one for KKR. But he endured a torrid time in the competition, highlighted by his average of 7.00 and strike rate of 84.5 with the bat. Bangar's medium-pace bowling did not induce much confidence either, with him picking up just four wickets at 54.8.
Andre Nel
South African pacer Andre Nel, known for his aggressive bowling, managed to get just one IPL game. In 2008, he was part of the Mumbai Indians XI against Delhi Daredevils and got the wicket of Gautam Gambhir – his only wicket in the tournament.
Nel started off his T20 career in 2003 and played until 2011, finishing with 37 wickets at an economy rate of under seven.
Tim Paine
Former Australia captain Tim Paine played a couple of matches for the now-defunct Pune Warriors XI in 2011. But he did not make any impact whatsoever, managing just 10 runs from 26 deliveries across two innings.
He was brought for USD 270,000, which is just over INR 1 crore. Paine, who was recently appointed the Adelaide Strikers head coach in the Big Bash League (BBL), has played 81 T20s overall, scoring 1,647 runs at a strike rate of 122.27.
Damien Martyn
Damien Martyn scored 19 off 24 in his only IPL innings for Rajasthan Royals (RR) against RCB in 2010 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium before Praveen Kumar cleaned him up. It was a game to forget for RR as they were bowled out for just 92 and lost the match by 10 wickets.
He was bought for USD 100,000 at the auction. One of Australia’s finest in Tests and ODIs, Martyn played four T20Is for Australia in which he scored 120 runs at a strike rate of 162.16, including a career-best 96 against South Africa in Brisbane in 2006.
Scott Boland
Rising Pune Super Giants (RPS) secured the services of Australian pacer Scott Boland for INR 50 lakh in 2016. He played against Delhi and Mumbai in his two games in the tournament, picking up two wickets at an economy rate of 7.7.
Boland made his white-ball debut for Australia earlier that year and is currently a key member of their Test side. However, as far as IPL opportunities go, he has not featured in a single game in the last eight years.
Younis Khan
Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in Tests and the man who led his country to the title in the T20 World Cup 2009, Younis Khan's solitary appearance in the IPL came in 2008. He batted at three for Rajasthan against Punjab in Mohali, scoring just three off seven deliveries before Irfan Pathan knocked over his wickets.
Younis had a decent T20 record. He slammed 1,864 runs at 30.55 (SR 117.30) in 83 matches, out of which 25 appearances came for Pakistan, including leading them to a T20 World Cup title.
