England skipper Jos Buttler could continue as non-keeper captain after his recent success in West Indies, where he handed over the gloves to his Lancashire teammate Phil Salt and led the team in the field, not from behind the stumps for the first time throughout a series.
England won the five-match T20I series 3-1 and Buttler is not against following the pattern even in the ODIs as well, especially ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
“I had more time and energy not being a wicket-keeper and around training as well. That’s something I found interesting,” Buttler was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The 34-year-old also outlined the role new white-ball coach Brendon McCullum could play in this transition of Buttler from keeper captain to fielder-captain as the Kiwi himself went through such a transition in his playing days.
“I know McCullum is coming in as the coach (who) in his career moved from wicketkeeper to a fielder, so that’s something I can discuss with him,” said the England captain.
“I’m just focused on Brendon coming in and getting close with him and working hard together to take the team where we want it to be,” he added.
