County club Northamptonshire have turned to former Australia coach Darren Lehmann to turn things around. They have appointed the former Australia international as head coach on a two-year deal, starting February 2025.
"Northamptonshire has a great history in our game and I am looking forward to meeting the players and learning about the club and its past and creating our history over the coming months and years," Lehmann, who had stepped back from his coaching job after heart-attack in 2020, said after re-joining the grind.
"The selling point for me is a group that wants to get better, follow their and the club's dreams, create memories, and play at the highest level possible. I will also encourage this on and off the field and keep an open-door policy. I'm sure we will have success and fun along the way."
Lehmann, who played for Australia in 27 Tests and 115 ODIs, spent considerable time in England, playing for Yorkshire. More recently, he also coached Headingley-based Norther Superchargers in The Hundred.
Northamptonshire's CEO, Ray Payne was delighted to have Lehmann as the coach.
“With the history, reputation, skills and knowledge that Darren possesses, it is a real marker in the ground and demonstrates once again, the club's desire to achieve its highest level on the field.
"From our first conversation with Darren it was clear to see his passion and excitement for the opportunity and his coaching philosophy is something that aligns well with the goals of the club,” Payne said.
The last title for the Northants came in the T20 Blast in 2016. In First-Class and List-A cricket, the team with a home stadium at Wantage Road have not won either the County Championship or the Pro 40, which is now the One-Day Cup, even once.
