It’s been a hectic yet forgettable 24 hours for West Indies’ Andre Russell, who has endured two failures across two different competitions and countries.
On February 2 (Sunday), the West Indian all-rounder represented Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (ADKR) in the ongoing edition of the ILT20 and capped his season off with a golden duck.
Playing against the Dubai Capitals in Dubai, Russell, walking in at No.4, was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera. ADKR went on to lose the contest by 26 runs and, with the defeat, crashed out of ILT20 2025.
Hours after ADKR’s exit, Russell wasted no time in flying straight to Mirpur to represent Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He got straight into Rangpur’s playing XI for the side’s Eliminator clash against Khulna Tigers.
However, the near-4500 kilometer journey proved to be a miserable one for Russell, who was dismissed for 4 runs off 9 balls. Russell, batting at No.8, was clean bowled by Pakistan left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz. His side Rangpur got bowled out for 85 and eventually crashed out as Khulna chased the target with nine wickets to spare.
It capped off a horror 16-hour period for the all-rounder, who got knocked out of two different competitions across two different countries.
Russell’s ADKR teammate Jason Holder also featured in the Eliminator clash between Rangpur and Khulna and suffered the same fate. The contest also consisted of the likes of James Vince, Tim David and Shimron Hetmyer, all of whom played in ILT20 2025.
Meanwhile, yesterday, Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka was in the news for playing first-class cricket in Sri Lanka and representing the Dubai Capitals in the space of a few hours. Remarkably, Shanaka hit a ton for the Sinhalese Sports Club in the morning and then hammered 34 off 12 balls for DC in the evening.
