Yugon ki Ladai to Nava Raja: Aussie newspapers go desi ahead of BGT

The News Corporation Australia through its various newspapers published an eight-page wrap in English, Hindi and Punjabi, available both in print and digital editions

The Australian media has gone all-out in promoting the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 as the biggest Test summer on the Australian shores is set to begin with the first Test on November 22 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

In their attempt to reach wider audiences, especially the immigrants and the Hindi and Punjabi diaspora, they have gone all Desi.

News Corporation Australia, through its various newspapers, Daily Telegraph (Sydney), Herald Sun (Melbourne), Courier Mail (Brisbane), and The Advertiser (Adelaide), published an eight-page wrap in English, Hindi, and Punjabi, available in print and digital editions.

The front page focused on Virat Kohli and the rivalry itself, with the BGT being called ‘Yogon Ki Ladai’ in Hindi, which translates to ‘fight for the ages’. On the back page, the focus was more on Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was called the new king or ‘Nava Raja’ in Punjabi.

Australia have not held the BGT since 2014-15 and the Pat Cummins-led side is as eager as the entire Australian crowd to wrest it back from India, who on their last two tours of Australia, have not lost the series.
