Jaiswal, Gill remind me of Tendulkar-Ganguly duo: Robin Uthappa

Jaiswal and Gill have opened on 10 occasions in T20I cricket and have smashed 527 runs at 58.55, which include four 50-plus stands in 10 innings

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has praised Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, saying that they remind him of the Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly pair. Tendulkar and Ganguly were the most successful opening pair in One-Day Internationals (ODI), having amassed 6,609 runs at 49.32, including 21 century stands to go with 23 fifty partnerships.

“I do see them, when I look at them they remind me of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar going out together, where their games kind of complimented each other. Their strategies complimented each other, that’s what I see when I see these two go out to bat together,” said Uthappa on Sony Sports Network.

The duo opened in two of the three matches in the recently concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka, which India won 3-0.

Jaiswal is yet to make his ODI debut but has opened with Gill on nine occasions, scoring 527 runs at 58.55, which includes two hundreds and as many fifty stands. Uthappa believes Jaiswal will seal his place once he gets a chance to play in the format.

“I honestly feel when he [Jaiswal] gets that opportunity in ODI cricket, he will seal that spot so quickly because after Test cricket and T20I cricket, ODI cricket is going to be so much easier for him. Because he will feel like I have all the time in the world to be able to score runs,” Uthappa added.

The 22-year-old has made a superb start to his international career since making his debut last year. In nine Tests, he has smashed 1,028 runs at 68.53, including three tons and four fifties. He has also had a productive T20I career, scoring 723 runs in 22 innings at an impressive strike rate of 164.31.
